From Idea to Skin: What Really Goes Into Creating a Skincare Product
When you pick up a jar of face cream or a bottle of facial oil, it can look deceptively simple. A label, a scent, a promise. But behind every small-batch skincare product lies months — sometimes years — of careful work.
As a small, independent skincare maker, I don’t launch products lightly. Every formulation begins with research: ingredient properties, compatibility, skin feel, shelf life, safety regulations. Natural skincare still has to meet strict cosmetic safety standards — and rightly so.
Once a formula is created, it goes through stability testing, safety assessment, and compliance checks before it can ever reach your hands. That includes CPSR certification, proper labelling, and ensuring every ingredient is within safe usage rates.
Then comes real-world testing.
I never release a facial product online without having first trialled it, and received genuine feedback about it. I want to know how it feels on the skin, how it absorbs, how it performs over time. That stage is invaluable.
After that comes the part many people don’t see — packaging choices, supplier sourcing, small-batch production scheduling, stock holding, and the financial risk of launching something new in a competitive skincare market dominated by big brand names.
Breaking into the skincare world as a small, one-person business is not easy. Customers often feel safer buying from familiar household brands, even when those products are more expensive or less natural. Trust takes time to build.
Every product you see in my range has been carefully considered, thoroughly tested, and genuinely believed in. Nothing is ever rushed or added “just because.”
Small batch skincare may look simple — but behind it sits care, science, regulation, and a great deal of persistence.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
